- Any person taking a biometric photo must not be wearing a uniform when taking the photo. Religious attire like a hijab or kippah is allowed. Glasses are not allowed unless the person must wear them at all times because of medical reasons.
History of Biometric Photos
The word biometric itself originates from two Greek words ‘bio’ and ‘metrics’ which translate into ‘life’ and ‘measure’. The first passport with a biometric photo was issued in 1915. The US Secretary of State ordered the introduction of passport photos after Charles A. Inglis, who was a German spy, got a US passport and traveled to the UK. His passport did not have a photograph so it was easy for him to enter.
Photo identification cards appear to have been first used at the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Scottish-born Canadian photographer William Notman introduced a photo identification system that was required for all exhibitors and employees of the exhibition.

You can take a biometric photo at a professional photo service or do it yourself. It is preferable that a professional take your biometric photo since the chances of getting it rejected are lower. If you decide to take the photo on your own, you must make sure that you fix the background and follow all the other guidelines for a biometric photo.
